Wiesbaden borders directly on Mainz. This elegant spa, and the capitol city of the State of Hessen, with circa 270,000 inhabitants, lies nestled between the Taunus and the Rhine river, and distinguishes itself with its mild, almost mediterranean climate. In good weather a ride with the Nerobergbahn presents a picture-book panorama, although this is not recommended for those afraid of heights. The hydraulically driven gondola goes for 440 meters and ascends at an angle of 26% to 80 meters high.

If you prefer to stay on the ground, I'd like to recommend a visit to the Fasanerie (pheasant park), the big animal and botanical park where you can take long walks. Or visit the one-time residence of the Count of Nassau, the Biebricher Schloss (castle), an imposing Baroque building direct on the Rhine. The Greek chapel with its five gold covered onion domes is worth a visit. Russian-Byzantine services are still held here.
